The version we know by heart
Most of us have a version of a relationship story that fits neatly into a conversation. There is a beginning, a turning point and a final message. We know which detail makes our friends shake their heads. We know where to pause.
That version may be true. It may also leave out the questions we haven’t found words for yet. The hope that kept us there. The boundary we struggled to explain. The thing we now recognise in ourselves.
A story can do more than make a case
It is understandable to want someone to see what happened and say: that was difficult. Being heard matters. But a story can have another life after it has been heard. It can become a way to notice what we need, what we value and what we want to change.
That doesn’t require making every experience a lesson, or making a painful ending sound positive. Some things are simply painful. Reflection can leave that truth intact.
The conversation we want to make room for
At ExBeen, we’re interested in the part that comes after the familiar retelling. What do you understand now that you couldn’t see then? What would you like to bring into the next chapter? What are you still unsure about?
We’re starting a media company because these conversations deserve care, craft and a place to live. The breakup may be where a story starts. It doesn’t have to be where we stop listening.
Be part of the first chapter.
